Elecciones en EEUU: los demócratas retomaron la Cámara de Representantes y los republicanos retuvieron el Senado
Estados Unidos eligió el martes un Congreso dividido: la oposición demócrata recuperó la Cámara de Representantes,pero el gobernante partido republicano mantuvo el Senado en unos comicios considerados como un referendo sobre el presidente Donald Trump, que reivindicó una victoria personal.
En unas polarizadas elecciones de mitad de mandato, el partido del expresidente Barack Obama cumplió su objetivo de dominar la cámara baja, algo que no hacía desde 2010, pero no pudo concretar la “ola azul” anti-Trump al quedar el Senado en manos republicanas.
“Tremendo éxito”, tuiteó el mandatario, que siguió los resultados en la Casa Blanca, donde pasó el día recluido con amigos y familiares.
El presidente llamó al líder del Senado, Mitch McConnell, para felicitarle por “los logros históricos” luego de que los republicanos aumentaran a 52 sus bancas en la cámara alta de 100, informó la portavoz, Sarah Sanders.
Pero para Trump, perder el control del Congreso, del que gozaba tras su sorpresivo triunfo hace dos años, es un revés en medio de resultados económicos exitosos, y complica sus perspectivas para el resto de su mandato.
Ahora los demócratas podrán no sólo bloquear iniciativas del mandatario sino también investigar sus finanzas y ahondar en la presunta colusión entre su equipo de campaña y Rusia en 2016, aumentando la posibilidad de que se inicie un proceso de destitución en su contra, aunque con escasas posibilidades de éxito.
“Hoy se trata más que de demócratas y republicanos, se trata de restaurar los poderes y contrapoderes constitucionales en la administración Trump”, dijo Nancy Pelosi, la actual líder de la minoría demócrata en la Cámara de Representantes, que probablemente vuelva a presidirla.
“Un Congreso demócrata va a trabajar en soluciones que nos unan, porque todos hemos tenido suficientes divisiones”, agregó sin embargo.
La decepción de Beto
En uno de los duelos seguidos con más atención, el carismático congresista demócrata Beto ORourke, que contaba con el apoyo de famosos como Beyoncé y LeBron James y logró recaudar 60 millones de dólares para su campaña, no pudo arrebatarle la banca en Texas al senador republicano Ted Cruz.
“Estoy muy orgulloso de Beto por todo lo que ha logrado, llegar tan cerca en un estado como Texas”, comentó en El Paso uno de sus seguidores, Keneth Melouda.
El republicano Mike Braun también derrotó en Indiana a Joe Donnelly, uno de los cinco senadores demócratas que se postularon para la reelección en estados donde Trump ganó por un margen considerable en 2016.
En Florida, el demócrata Andrew Gillum, que aspiraba a ser el primer gobernador negro de ese estado, concedió la victoria a su contrincante republicano Ron DeSantis, un consentido de Trump.
En Georgia, otra demócrata afroestadounidense, Stacey Abrams, también parecía encaminarse hacia una derrota frente al republicano Brian Kemp.
La sonrisa de Alexandria
Pero los demócratas registraron importantes triunfos. La estrella Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, de origen puertorriqueño y nacida en el Bronx hace apenas 29 años, hizo historia al convertirse en la mujer más joven en ser electa al Congreso.
Sharice Davids y Deb Haaland también se destacaron como las primeras mujeres indígenas estadounidenses en la Cámara baja.
En Florida, Donna Shalala se quedó con el escaño de la legendaria republicana Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, primera cubana- estadounidense elegida al Congreso y quien se jubila; y en Virginia, Jennifer Wexton desbancó a la saliente Barbara Comstock.
En el Senado, Bob Menéndez fue reelecto en Nueva Jersey, para alivio de los demócratas, que temían que las acusaciones de corrupción en su contra le costaran el escaño.
El regreso de Mitt
Mitt Romney, feroz detractor de Trump en filas republicanas, llegó al Senado por Utah y muchos se preguntan ya si tomará el lugar de John McCain, fallecido en agosto, como una de las voces críticas del mandatario.
Otro habitual opositor de Trump, Bernie Sanders, importante figura de la izquierda en Estados Unidos, fue reelegido sin sorpresas como senador por Vermont.
La elección trajo otras novedades.
Greg Pence, hermano mayor del vicepresidente Mike Pence, ganó un escaño republicano en la Cámara de Representantes.
Ayanna Pressley será la primera mujer negra en representar a Massachusetts en el Congreso, en tanto Ilhan Omar y Rashida Tlaib, serán las primeras musulmanas.
