VIDEOS – Impresionante explosión en el puerto de Beirut: estalló un depósito y hay al menos 73 muertos
El hecho ocurrió en un galpón que contenía explosivos incautados y se sintió en toda la capital libanesa. La columna de humo es visible desde varios kilómetros de distancia. El ministerio de Salud confirmó 3.700 heridos. la ciudad fue declarada zona de desastre
Una fuerte explosión sacudió este martes la capital libanesa, sobre la que se eleva una gran columna de humo de color rojizo, que se originó en un depósito del puerto de Beirut, informó la Agencia Nacional de Noticias (ANN).
Según la agencia estatal, un incendio comenzó cerca de los silos de trigo del puerto, en un almacén que contenía explosivos incautados, lo cual provocó una fuerte deflagración que pudo sentirse en toda la ciudad y sus suburbios. Una gigantesca nube de hongo fue visible a varios kilómetros de distancia.
La cadena libanesa LBCI precisó que la sustancia que explotó fue nitrato de sodio, utilizada como fertilizante y también para producir explosivos, que había sido confiscado a un buque un año atrás.
El presidente libanés, Michel Aoun, convocó el martes por la noche una “reunión urgente” del Consejo Superior de Defensa. Poco después, el organismo declaró a Beirut como “zona de desastre”.
Por su parte, el primer ministro Hassan Diab decretó luto nacional el miércoles por “las víctimas de la explosión.
Además, Diab agregó que “los responsables de esta catástrofe deberán rendir cuentas” por lo sucedido.
“Es una catástrofe en todos los sentidos”, lamentó al ser interrogado por la televisión cuando visitaba un hospital de la capital. “Los hospitales de la capital están todos llenos de heridos”, subrayó, antes de pedir que se trasladen a otros heridos a los centros hospitalarios de las afueras de la capital.

Por su parte, Georges Kettaneh, el presidente de la Cruz Roja libanesa, habló de “centenares de heridos” en una declaración en la televisión libanesa LBC. “Estamos abrumados por las llamadas telefónicas”, dijo.
La organización ha desplegado más de 30 equipos para atender a los afectados y ha pedido a las ambulancias de todo el país que acudan a la capital, tal y como dijo a través de su cuenta oficial de Twitter.
Al mismo tiempo, centros hospitalarios y usuarios en las redes sociales están pidiendo donaciones de sangre urgentemente y otros afirman que los hospitales están desbordados.
Columnas de humo blanco y también de color rojizo se elevaban sobre el área del puerto, ubicado en la costa mediterránea.
Residentes reportaron ventanas rotas y la caída de techos precarios, incluso en barrios alejados del lugar. Un fotógrafo de la agencia AP cerca del puerto fue testigo de personas heridas en el suelo y destrucción generalizada en el centro de Beirut.
Casi todas las vitrinas de los comercios de los barrios de Hamra, Badaro y Hazmieh estallaron al igual que las ventanillas de los autos.

El sector del puerto ha sido acordonado por las fuerzas de seguridad, que solo dejan pasar al personal de defensa civil, ambulancias y bomberos. En los alrededores, la magnitud de los daños y la destrucción es importante.
Los coches dañados en las cercanías quedaron abandonados en la calle con los airbags inflados. “Los edificios están temblando”, tuiteó un residente, mientras otro escribió: “Una enorme y ensordecedora explosión acaba de engullir Beirut. La escuché a kilómetros de distancia”.
La economía del Líbano se ha derrumbado en los últimos meses, con la caída de la moneda local frente al dólar, el cierre masivo de empresas y el aumento de la pobreza al mismo ritmo alarmante que el desempleo.
